  • Developmental Review for 2011-2012
As a team, we need to rate each area of the review based on this school year and send to Vickie on Monday afternoon. Meeting for review is Wednesday, 5/9/2012.

11-22-11: Michele Jordan, Michael Lemke, David Stegall, John Worley, Bill Ren, Vickie Norris, Lisa Wade

Purpose of Meeting

  • To determine what our next step is once we finish Reading Foundations Training,
  • Develop a continuity of instruction (especially for EC kids),
  • Make a plan for the remainder of the 2011-2012 school year

Keep in Mind: continuity across the system and intentionally selecting what we need to do

Discussion of Reading Street Basals
  • Teachers observe gaps in what is provided
  • Using guided reading and small group reading to fill voids
  • Basal used as shared reading
  • Supplementary program called My Sidewalks is the companion to Reading Street (we do not have)
  • The problem with My Sidewalks is that it lacks word study and review of these skills to improve automaticity
  • Suggestion: use as whole group reading and then differentiate reading instruction

Implementation of Words Their Way
  • Kids struggle with foundational skills
  • This is helping with word patterns and spelling

Assessments Used
  • Reading 3D (K-5)
  • Dibels (K-2)
  • Suggestion: Go 1 step further and complete IRI's for those kids who are intensive needs

Are we willing to have an administrative strand of foundations training?
  • Yes--This will help bridge the understanding for students and teachers

After discussion, it was determined that we are a Best Practice Site. We need to:
  1. Complete reading foundations (Michael, Julia, Lisa, Michele)
  2. Designate district sites/people (one school the main site with EC and some RE people, all other elementary EC?)
  3. Survey of ECs (listed below)

Eventually:
  1. Visit sites around us then make selection of a program
  2. Train all EC staff in new program with a program trainer
  3. Have a literacy coach in place to ensure fidelity to the model (Train the Trainer model)
  4. Complete fidelity checks and the annual program review

What to do Right Now:
  1. Survey the EC people at all levels (elem, MS, HS) as well as administrators
  2. Find out:
  • The continuum which the teacher is in place (inclusion, resource, self-contained)
  • What program(s) the EC teachers use to teach literacy
  • What trainings teachers have received
    • When did you receive training?
  • What assessments do you use
    • to determine current student instructional needs
  • Do you progress monitorBreakdown headcount (how many SLD, OHI, DD, ID, etc.)
    • How often?

  • Inventory of programs at the schools

We are tentatively scheduled to attend trainings in Winston. However, Morganton is thinking of offering training; we prefer to be close so if Morganton cannot commit, we will commit to being a training site.

If I missed any important information, please make changes!!
